Why Work in the UK?
With a large thriving expat community, particularly in London, but also in other major cities across the UK, many Australians choose to locate themselves there for the purposes of work and culture. With Europe on its doorstep, the UK boasts easy access to the glamorous Mediterranean, snow topped mountains of the Alps and cultural hotspots across northern Europe.
Australian healthcare professionals are very much sought after in the UK. An ageing population, combined with a skills shortage within healthcare professions has led to a significant increase in the number of physiotherapists, radiographers, dietitians, occupational therapists and podiatrists required in the UK.
Choosing the Right Visa
Whether you are planning to visit under the Working Holiday Visa or if you are seeking to move there more permanently, there are many visa options available. Like the Australian system, the UK’s visa application process is based on a points system. However, if you hold the 'Right to Abode', you may already be eligible to work there. There are three conditions that you need to meet order to have 'right of abode':
One of your parents was born in the UK (and was still a UK citizen at time of your birth)
You were born before 1st January 1983 into a Commonwealth country
You have never ceased to be a Commonwealth citizen since 31st December 1982
You can apply for a Youth Mobility Scheme visa if you want to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years and are aged 18 to 35.
The UK’s Healthcare System
The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) is a public funded medical system and covers general practice (GP surgeries) and hospital trusts throughout the country. Thanks to a reciprocal health care deal, Australians can get free healthcare through the NHS for up to six months.
